Introduction to Hand Weaving with Woven Form

from £240.00
sold out

Hand weaving is a beautiful and expressive way to start exploring the world of textiles and this two-day workshop will offer a very free and easy approach to get you started working on a hand loom.

The weekend is suitable for all skill levels and the project is designed to be achievable for all. By the end of the weekend, you will be armed with the skills to carry on your hand weaving journey at home.

The workshop runs from 11am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Attendance on both days is required.

Day 1

Charlotte will begin by giving you a brief introduction to the history of weaving, how it has developed through the years and will introduce you to the work of some talented weavers you might have heard of such an Anni Albers. Charlotte will briefly take you through her own journey with weaving and how she has developed her practice over the last 15 years since starting at university.

Next you will learn how to set up the frame loom and we will discuss the merits of different yarn choices for weaving, from merino wool, mohair, cotton, linen and silk to name a few. You will then be able to experiment with these yarns on your small frame, testing out the different textures, patterns and colour combinations, until you find the perfect selection for your final piece.

Day 2

On Sunday we will work on your final larger piece, taking what you learnt from the previous day and continuing to develop those skills. It will be a lovely experimental experience bringing together your chosen textures and colours to create a gorgeous original art piece which you can frame or hang in your home. You will be able to keep the frame loom at the end of the workshop so you can continue your weaving journery at home.

What to Bring

  • Please bring along any specific yarns that you may like to use. You can weave with just about anything so any ribbons, raffia, old clothes, fabric, balls of wool, or anything else which you wish to incorporate into your artwork. There will also be a selection of yarn provided for you to work with over the weekend.

  • Any images or items which you have as inspiration for your artwork. This is not essential but can be useful to help you focus your work.

  • Your own pair of scissors.

All other tools, materials, refreshments and a simple vegetarian lunch will be provided on each day over the weekend.

About your teacher: Charlotte Wakefield

Charlotte is the woman behind her business Woven Form, where she creates one-of-a-kind handwoven textile art pieces for the home. Charlotte first fell in love with weaving over 15 years ago at Brighton University where she was instantly captivated by the practice and the endless possibilities for experimentation through fibre, structure and colour. She was drawn to the freedom the craft presented, as well as the practice itself offering a peaceful and relaxing experience.

Charlotte enjoys working with a variety of different yarns that she largely sources from deadstock supplies from mills & factories that would oherwise be a waste product of the textile industry. Her approach to weaving is very free, often not knowing what she is going to create when she sits down at the loom. It is her organic approach to her work that she enjoys the most, as she focuses on combining different textures and colours to create her unique pieces.
