Marquetry retreat weekend with Chelsea Vivash

from £200.00

Join artist and designer Chelsea Vivash for a two-day creative retreat weekend, where you will create a contemporary wooden serving tray using the traditional woodworking technique of marquetry.

In this course, Chelsea will share her experience and guide you through creating a decorative and functional marquetry piece using a combination of both natural and dyed real wood veneers. Delve into the world of marquetry and bring your unique design to life with your own two hands!

You will begin by learning about wood veneers as a material - how it behaves and how to cut and build images using the technique.

You will then create your own marquetry tray design and apply it to a ready-made plywood frame. Together we will then construct and finish your tray, ready for you to take home.

All materials will be provided for the course, including a plywood tray, all the wood veneers, glues and finishes. Some drawing materials will also be provided, but please feel free to bring along any sketchbooks and drawing/colouring implements that you may wish to use to create your design with.

Woodworking knowledge isn’t essential, but it helps to have good control of a scalpel blade, as the technique requires some cutting precision.

The workshop runs from 11am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Attendance on both days is required. A simple, vegetarian lucnch will be provided on each day.

Day 1

1. Practising the technique of marquetry (cutting veneers)

2. Planning the design (drawing and adding colour)

3. Cutting out the parts for the final design

Day 2

1. Gluing to frame (1-2 hour wait whilst gluing)

2. Trimming and sanding

3. Finishing
