‘Painting with gold’ retreat weekend with Ruth Parker

from £240.00
sold out

Join artist Ruth Parker for a weekend of creative experiments with verre églomisé. Learn the ancient process of gilding precious metals onto the reverse side of glass and experiment with decorative techniques to create your own unique glass tile.

We will work with gold leaf to create a ‘glass canvas’ that participants can either frame to be enjoyed as a beautiful piece of artwork in its own right, or use as a small practical mirror for the home.

Throughout the weekend Ruth will introduce you to the ancient tools needed to water gild, combined with a modern approach to mark-making with tools and drawing techniques that give the mirrored surface its unique look. The art of gilding is a very meditative process and this workshop will guide you in how to work in harmony with the delicate gold metal, whilst providing the fundamental skills to allow you to continue the practice at home.

The workshop runs from 11am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Attendance on both days is required.

Day one

We will begin with the practical skills of learning how to prepare the glass before applying the gold leaf using a gelatine adhesive (gold size). The basic tools of water gilding are very accessible, but we will spend some time getting used to handling them alongside the delicate gold leaf and practise applying it to the glass.

During the day we will gather inspiration from within the beautiful surroundings of the house to create simple line drawings which will inform the design for our mirrored surface. Ruth will guide you with tips and inspiration and how to consider your designs when you translate them to working in the reverse, which is necessary through the verre églomisé process. We will practise how mark-making works when applied to the gilded gold to inform the final design of our piece to take home.

Day Two

On Sunday we will start working on our final pieces. Ruth will show you how to transfer your guideline drawing onto the glass and then be on hand to help with technical and creative questions. We will explore some fast drying paint effects that add decorative interest to the piece and also act as a protective finish.

We ask participants to bring with them:

  • 1 book of 23.5ct Loose Gold Leaf - Standard. Each booklet contains 25 leaves. One book will be enough to complete the final project, but if participants would like to have additional gold leaf to practise with then feel free to bring multiple booklets. Ruth recommends the following supplier and the link takes you to the correct product: https://www.goldleafsupplies.co.uk/23-5ct-loose-gold-leaf-standard-80-x-80mm-356/

  • A sharpie pen

  • Any small objects, drawings, ref material which might act as inspiration to your final piece (optional)

  • You many want to wear an apron to protect your clothes (optional)

The glass for your final piece and all the other tools and basic materials will be provided. Refreshments and a simple lunch is also included on each day over the weekend.
