Mobile Making Workshop with Corrie Williamson
Join Corrie at Kindred House to create your own beautiful hanging piece of suspended artwork.
Using a collection of found objects, reclaimed woods and metals, you will work with the guidance of Corrie to create your own unique mobile or hanging sculpture.
Participants are welcome to bring their own found objects along, or choose from a selection of items that Corrie will provide on the day.
You will learn and practice some simple wood and metalworking techniques, which you will then use to join the materials together and work on getting a balanced finished piece. Participants can either re-create an existing design from Corrie, or create thier own composition on the day.
The weekend is suitable for all skill levels and the project is designed to be achievable for all.
All materials for the workshop, refreshments and a simple vegetarian lunch will be provided on the day.

About your teacher: Corrie Williamson
Corrie trained in textiles, and credits this for her love of pattern. Her unique, sculptural mobiles create ever-changing, dynamic patterns, tracing silhouettes and shadows across walls. Whilst working as a Jeweller, her designs started to get bigger and the larger pieces led naturally to her first mobile, created when her baby daughter was born. It was modestly created with what she could find around the house.
Working with what’s nearby is integral to Corrie’s work. “I like that part of the process of making things is being constrained by what you have around you, rather than being able to always get exactly what you want. It's quite nice just working with what you have; I think that's how the best ideas come.”
Alongside wood, a key material Corrie uses is metal; particularly brass, as it can be melted down and reused infinitely. “Over time I've built up quite a stash. I shared a studio for a while with an instrument maker and they had some really good materials they had no use for. Even things like cymbals. When a drummer's cymbals break, which can happen often, there's lots of metal there to work with.” This eagerness to work with unconventional materials brings both a lyrical and organic quality to her work. Her work articulates confident material combinations and artful arrangements, which create unexpected harmonies.
Corrie was chosen as one of Toast’s 2021 New Makers and has worked with clients including Selfridges, Tate Modern, Barbican and Jigsaw. She now works from home in her Hackney studio.
