Introduction to Natural Dyeing with The Natural Dyeworks

Join The Natural Dyeworks at Kindred House for an introduction to natural dyeing, where you will make your own Furoshiki cloth.

Natural dyeing is a process that uses botanical ingredients to dye cloth in ways that have been used for thousands of years. It is chemical free, 100% natural, slow and sustainable.

Dyeing with plants encourages the dyer to build a strong connection with their natural surroundings and experience the seasons in a new light. Plant ingredients suitable for dyeing can be sourced through foraging (Nuts, leaves, berries, bark), growing (Flowers & herbs) as well as everyday plant based food waste.

This introductory workshop is suitable for beginners and you will learn the skills needed to continue your practice at home.

We will talk through simple steps for how to prepare different fabrics through scouring and mordanting and share techniques to avoid disappointing results. We will work with dye baths created from foraged seasonal and kitchen ingredients and we will then dye a range of swatches, using modifiers to obtain a broader palette. You will then have the opportunity to dye a raw edged linen fabric square that can be used as a furoshiki cloth to wrap food, objects or gifts.

We will discuss the different natural ingredients that can be used to create a wide palette of colours, how to forage responsibly and tips on what to look out for throughout the seasons.

All materials will be provided and there will be a worksheet for you to keep as well as all samples made during the workshop. Please bring an apron or wear old clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting marked.

Refreshments will be provided.

Should you wish to book in to stay a night with us at Kindred House for this event, please send us a request through our booking enquiry form. Alternatively you can also book our Botanical Retreat Weekend for an all-inclusive two-night stay at Kindred House with full access to both our weekend workshops.

During our events, the guest house is reserved for the attendees who receive a 15% discount on their stay. Rooms are limited & tend to get booked quickly so get in touch early to avoid disappointment.

The workshop is limited to 6 places to ensure a safe working environment. If dates need to change due to Covid, you’ll be able to swap to the new date or obtain a refund if you’re unable to make the new date. Otherwise tickets are non-refundable.

The Natural Dyeworks was founded by Ros, a natural dyer living in the Kent countryside who works exclusively with natural fibres making small batch, slow crafted, accessories and homewares using the alchemy of 100% plant based dyes, which are natural and non toxic. The ingredients are foraged in the Kent countryside, grown on her dye allotment or are sourced from food waste collected from local cafes. Sometimes the dyes come in powdered form from responsible GOTs certified companies. Ros’s process is 100% natural, slow and sustainable and care for the environment is at the heart of the company. Ros loves sharing her knowledge and teaches regularly around the country.
